Tells serve whether the browser shows a file or downloads it.

Either way Content-Disposition carries the original file name (ASCII in filename=, UTF-8 in filename*= when needed, RFC 6266).

Variants

Inline

Shows the file in the page or tab when its type is safe to display, and downloads anything else.

Safe types: raster images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, BMP, TIFF, icons), PDF, plain text, audio and video (MPEG, Ogg, WAV, WebM, MP4). HTML, SVG, XML and JavaScript are sent as application/octet-stream downloads, so an uploaded file never runs as part of the app (Rails’ content_types_allowed_inline / content_types_to_serve_as_binary).

Download

Always downloads the file, with its original name.
